Having a garden full of blooms extends the feel of the summer season into fall. Choosing a perennial selection that will provide green foliage for the summer but blooms for the fall offers color and contrast in the garden as well as beautiful cuttings to bring indoors. These plants and flowers are hardy to zone 4 or until the first frost of the season sets in.
Chrysanthemums
This flowering plant provides a splash of color throughout the late summer into the fall that includes yellows, oranges, whites, reds, burgundies and pale pinks.
Sedum "Autumn Joy"
Sedum "Autumn Joy" provides strong green foliage throughout the summer and then blooms into a dark red flower that lasts until the first frost.
Cosmos
The colorful cosmos in white, deep purple and bright pink begin their flowering show in the early summer. Hearty plants can last straight through to the first hard frost and make perfect cutting flowers.
Goldenrod
The goldenrod plant produces flowers that look like plumes of golden fireworks. These flowers are great for floral arrangements and dry well for preservation.
Helianthus
This flowering plant is also called a perennial sunflower. The small, gold, daisy flowers are great for attracting both birds and butterflies straight through the first frost.
